“PUT THE MASK ON NOW, PUT THE MASK ON NOW…”
3-D sequence from The Mask directed and co-produced by Julian Roffman (1961)
The 3-D sequences in The Mask were designed by montage expert Slavko Vorkapich, and feature an array of distinctively psychedelic visuals, some of which are mildly gruesome. A crude electronic music score (billed as “Electro Magic Sound” in publicity materials) enhances the strangeness of the 3-D scenes.
Vorkapich was an early master of the now common montage sequence, these sequences were even termed eponymously as the “vorkapich” in Hollywood scripts of the ’30s and ’40s because of his mastery of dynamic visual.
